Transition into the Adult World

Preparation for post high school education or a career is an important component of our educational program. Our guidance counselors help facilitate this transition to enhance options for employment.

Career awareness is an ongoing process. Life skill programs are incorporated into all of our Core Curriculum subject matter. In addition, we offer a limited pre-vocational program which includes woodworking projects, art, publishing a yearbook, running a school store, model building and computer science technology. We invite people in the community to talk about their “real life” experiences. For example, some of our speakers include a former student, who is a Marine, just returned from Iraq, a police officer, and an airline pilot who was also a Rutgers scholarship football athlete.

As part of this process some students mainstream back into public education programs graduating with their sending district classmates. Other students attend Oakwood School on a shared-time basis also enrolling in the County vocational schools. Oakwood School utilizes the “Fast Start” program at Brookdale College, which is geared toward academically proficient students who are college bound. In another pathway, in conjunction with the sending districts, students are placed in work-study programs to ensure a smooth transition into the working world.
